The Creativity Inside All of Us

Kim Rounsefell·July 28, 2020
The Creativity Inside All of Us

Creativity is an innate part of us all—we're born with it.

Growing up, I rarely allowed my self to explore creativity and art. I'd always dismissed it as being for people who were good at painting like artists.

It's only been these later years that I've explored art and creativity as a way to unwind, express ideas, and as a healing tool from stressors or other things that are happening too. The funny thing was, the more I explored creativity and art, the more I've enjoyed it and found it was a helpful outlet for healing, growing, and exploring creativity further.

What's fascinating and something I hadn't given too much thought to until reading Everyday Creativity and Healing. It is how inherent creativity is to our bodies.  Dr. Ruth Richards gives an example of creativity in physical healing.

"Healing is a creative response of our bodies to injury. Even healing from something as simple as a scratch on a leg invites our bodies to evaluate the scratch, see how it's different from all other scratches we have ever had and marshal the resources necessary to heal this scratch in a particular way."

That's pretty cool. If that's what our body does at a cellular level, how would our minds and our bodies adapt if we allowed ourselves to explore more creativity too?

It's not just for artists, exploring more creativity can benefit everyone.

If you're looking for ways to get started with some creativity of your own, be sure to check out our self-care zine-making art and craft kits.
